History of World Tourism Day
The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in September 1979, decided to organize World Tourism Day and on 27 September 1980, it was first celebrated. The date of 27 September was chosen because it was the anniversary of the acceptation of the UNWTO Statutes on September 27, 1970. Tourism has experienced continued development and massive diversification to become this one of the fastest growing economic sectors worldwide. Present tourism is closely associated with the development, and it has added more new destinations for the tourists.
The UNWTO believes that the date which is chosen for World Tourism Day is adequate. Because this date comes at the end of the high tourist season in the northern hemisphere and the beginning of the tourist season in the southern hemisphere. Now, tourism has become one of the significant sources of income, and by this source of income, it represents many developing countries.
