The International Museum Day is an international day celebration which is held on 18th May annually around the world to highlights the specific theme which is changes every year. This day is organized by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). This event is in the heart of the international museum community’s preoccupations.

The International Museum Day was created in 1977 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) to promote museums’ role worldwide. From its creation 1977, public attention to it has increased every year. In the year 2009, International Museum Day attracted 20,000 museums to participate and hold events more than 90 countries. After this, its attention is increasing every year, and today this day is celebrated in more than 180 countries all over the world and hosted many events in over 30,000 museums.

Each year from 1977, all museums over the world are invited to participate in International Museum Day to promote the role of museums, creating unique, amusing, free and fun activities in a specific theme discussed within the ICOM community for this particular day. According to ICOM, a museum is a non-profit, permanent institution in the service of society and its development that is open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches communicates and exhibits the humanity and its environment for education, study and enjoyment.

On International Museum Day many events and activities are organized to raise public awareness and to highlight museums role that plays in the development of society on an international level, today. Different seminars, exhibitions, sports festival, workshops, and educational programs for families and school children were organized in various museums around the world.

The International Museum Day provides an opportunity for the people to meet the museum professionals and alert them to the challenges that museums face.

Is it a Public Holiday?

The International Museum Day is an annual observance and not a public holiday. Public life is not affected by this day.

Every year has a specific theme to celebrate this day. This year’s theme of International Museum Day 2019 is “Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition.” All events and activities are organized according to their year’s theme. Every year, the International Council of Museum chooses the theme and organizes the event.
