The International Day of Peace is a yearly observance which is celebrated on 21 September around the world to promote peace around the world and to acknowledge the efforts of the people who have worked hard to remove the conflict. The United Nations organized this day. The International Day of Peace is also sometimes called World Peace Day.

History of International Day of Peace

In 1981, the UN General Assembly announced that the International Day of Peace would celebrate on third Tuesday of September in the resolution which was sponsored by the United Kingdom and Costa Rica. This day is devoted to remembering and stabilizing the ideals of peace. In 1982 the International Day of Peace was first celebrated, and till 2001, it was celebrated on third Tuesday of September every year. In 2001, The United Nations of General Assembly decided that the International Day of Peace should be annually held on 21 September. From 2002, the International Day of Peace is celebrating on 21 September every year as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence.

The UN dedicated itself for global peace and motivated the people to work in collaboration for this goal, by creating the International Day of Peace. From its beginning, the International Day of Peace has noticed personal and global progress toward peace. Many events are held every year to commemorate and celebrate this day, and by this, it has grown to add millions of people around the world.

The theme of the International Day of Peace

International Day of Peace is celebrated with a specific theme every year. Events and activities are organized according to this day theme. Some previous year theme of International Day of Peace is as follows:

How people celebrated this day?

International Day of Peace

On International Day of Peace, many events and activities are held around the world with the theme “Peace” to promote this day. Many people around the worldwide take part in these events and activities. In these events and activities include tree planting for peace, art exhibitions promoting peace, a peace convoy of vehicles, a toast for peace, peace walks, peace prayers, interfaith peace ceremonies, and lighting candles. In educational institutes, educational activities about peace are held. Besides these, music concerts, peace doves, prayer vigils, peace conferences, and UN activities also held on this day.

Many organizations and groups also do support events on an annual basis on International Day of Peace. At noon in every time zone, some groups observe a minute of silence around the world on International Day of Peace.

Is it a public holiday?

The International Day of Peace is the United Nations annual observance and not a public holiday. On this day, all nations worldwide are invited to honor a cessation of hostilities during the day.
